Developmental Delays Research Paper

According to (How A Child Develops Development Delay) development delays usually happens when a children does not accomplish certain development milestones. Development milestones are various changes in skills through which a child goes through in child development. These development milestones should be attained in predictable time intervals. Therefore at a certain period a child is supposed to have learnt a certain skill. For instance by the period of 9 to 15 months, a child is supposed to have learnt how to walk. If a child of an age of 20 months does not know how to walk, then we may conclude that, that child is experiencing development delays. However, development delays have quite a range of symptoms or signs among children. To fully understand the impacts of development delays, we must keenly analyze these indicators of development delays. These indicators are classified into four distinct categories that have major impact to child development. These categories include behavioral, gross motor, hearing and vision. To start with, we have the behavioral signs. A child experiencing development delays may seem not to focus or be attentive to an activity for such a long period unlike other children in which children of the same age are engaged with. The children with this complication may also focus on some unusual object for quite some time. Children with this problem will find more ‘entertainment’ in these objects than interacting with their colleagues. They will as well avoid any eye contacts with their colleagues. Therefore, these children are shy to the rest. They will as well get frustrated in accomplishing simple tasks that children of their age can perform. These children act aggressively and at times a teacher or guardian may feel that the child is somehow stubborn unlike other children of their age. This violent behavior may be persistent and may happen day in day out. This child will too find comfort by staring into space, talking to themselves or even rocking the body. These children will seek no love from their parents or teacher. What are the implications of these behaviors to a young child and in the learning process? These traits may heavily negatively affect a child in a pre-school environment. An usual characteristic with children is their curiosity to learn new things. Unlike that, there is a child here who has no concentration to learning. Learning entails a lot of concentration from the learners to get the concept. A child with no concentration will therefore miss a lot of information from the teacher. A preschool teacher may feel irritated by a child who is not concentrating and so may act harshly on them. A pre school teacher must therefore take precaution in handling such children. This child will focus on other irrelevant issues that distract them from learning. We have also observed that the child’s interactive part is affected.   In a preschool environment, a lot of activities entail working in groups. The games, construction, they all require children to participate in various roles. These don’t find it comfortable with other children and may therefore miss some important skills. Children act in hostile manner such that they may harm others. Other children will avoid them altogether. These children feel isolated and have no love altogether. They will therefore live as deviants which may ultimately affect their learning. The second category, which is the gross motor symptoms. There are various physiological conditions. A child will have traits such as stiff arms and/or legs. The child uses one side of the body than the other. He or she therefore has a limp body posture unlike other children of their age. In learning, children are expected to engage in various sports that require a lot of physical input. Children with these difficulties will end up being fatigued in very short instances. This child may therefore not participate fully. This child may therefore feel frustrated for not engaging with others and may develop a ‘I can’t do it’ attitude. This child will grow up in a demoralized state. Children with development delays also have some vision problems. This child seems to have a problem following objects with both of their eyes. They also have difficulties on focusing on objects and will therefore have to close one eye and use the other eye to focus on the object. These children usually have to find uncomfortable postures so that they can be able to see distant objects. There are abnormalities in vision as the children find the objects in not their appropriate sizes and colors. These vision problems may affect a child both in class and also in out door activities. A child may not clearly see what the teacher is writing and therefore literacy might be a problem. Children participation in outdoor games may be hindered too. Uncomfortable postures, and especially at tender age, may affect the child’s bone structure and especially the backbone which may lead complication later on in life. A child may also exhibit hearing complications where the child may talk too loudly or softly. The child has to turn ears to the direction of the voice or a caller so as to get the message being passed on. This child will therefore find it difficult in communicating with their colleges. These children also have underdeveloped speech. They have sounds and words that are possibly not of their age bracket. Children with hearing complications may not get all the information passed on by the teacher. Hearing is an important sensory function and especially to someone who needs to learn. The child too has deformed ears in shape. This may act as ridicule by many of their colleagues who may perceive it as funny. These children may therefore feel stigmatized which will definitely hinder their learning abilities. All in all, development delays will hinder a child’s learning abilities in a very large manner. The child has some is sort of handicapped but is as well normal and will therefore be stigmatized by the other children of their age. Parents and teachers are therefore encouraged to take precautionary measures once they detect some of these complications among their children. Parents are therefore encouraged to enroll for these early intervention services programs which offer support to families so as to enhance child development. If this is not done, these complications may not be corrected and may end up as scars to a child even at mature age and may therefore not catch up with those of their age. These children may even end committing suicide at teenage. (How Kids Develop) In developing a curriculum for a pre-school class, educators must as well understand the development of the children. They must relate the curriculum to the development of the children. This means that, educators must teach or pass on skills that are compatible with the children. A curriculum should be in such a way that, children are able to understand what they are taught by the teachers. A good curriculum is one that considers starting with the basics. The basics are the foundation of education. The cognitive development of a child is such a process that requires systematic feeding of information. A curriculum should therefore emphasis on what is important for the children at the right time. A curriculum should be used to help a child develop but not to confuse the child. Educators must be keen on various typical behaviors of children during their development.( Developmental domains, cognitive development, language development, early childhood development) In this case they must be able to utilize those behaviors in trying to enlighten the young ones. Most of these behaviors come as a result of domain development. There are four major development domains, these include the physical development. This entails general growth of the body structure. The physical development also includes sensory development which includes vision, hearing, touch smell, and the integration and coordination of these systems to the central nervous system.   There is also the cognitive development. This includes the development of the mind, with the ability to think reason and even remember. There is the social development which incorporates the development of a child’s ability to interact with others. There is also the emotional behavior. The child starts to have a de fined sort of trait. In each of these developments, children develop certain traits that are important when developing a curriculum. At some age, children are very playful. Some parents get it wrong when they deny their children to play. Children also get curious about various issues, like for instance they may ask a stranger too many questions. Children too feel the need to make friendship with their colleagues. They feel that they want to have social groups. A curriculum should incorporate these traits to enhance the development of the children. (High Scope curriculum) A good preschool curriculum, it must have at least have these important components to help a child develop in the various domains. One of the very important components is language and literacy. A curriculum should be able to enhance the development of language. The curriculum should also help the child be able to read and write too. This is the basis of education. A child should therefore be able to read stories and also narrate them to fellow children. A child should be able to scribble letters. A second important component of a preschool curriculum is numbers. A child should be able to compare various numbers. This child should also be able to determine a greater number than the other. In numbers, there is need for experiments so that the children are able to recognize the practicability of numbers. Numbers is a very relevant topic for developing minds as the day today lives entail mathematics all around us. There is also an important component which is creativity. Children should be introduced to drawing of shapes to represent things in their environment. Children should also be taught how to recognize objects using their sense organs. Children should also get engaged with making models using clay or blocks. This is a process of socializing the child to their environment. We recognize that growth is a process and it is necessary that curriculums have important components that are of benefit to children.

The Newton massacre once again had a nation grieving for loss of innocent lives in such tragic ways and once again the issue of gun control went to the front of the nation’s agenda. A gun is used in a homicide 3.2 times per 100,000 people per the FBI Crime Reports of 2011. In 2009, firearm fatal ities numbered 11,826 homicides, 18,735 suicides, 554 accidental shootings and 232 unknown causes. The National Rifle Association was born in 1871. It is not through the governments or the legislatures that peace and unity can be established among people or nations. What is necessary is a sense of LOVE with a change of mind and heart through greater understanding. It is like magnetism where people are allured to giving so much significance to worldly existence. We have to seek to the deep insight of the people and conditions and acquire required knowledge and experiences to view things in order to attain the notion of the one humanity on this planet. Our mutual connection with each other is another important aspect. In this regard we try to organize ourselves to be a part of something and maintain it in order. Consequently we are joinable. Certainly school is a keyboard, where its victories and defeats are felt by all the students. Press one key of the keyboard and the sound is felt throughout. There is a fact that rises above just being connected that is not only we sense each others existence, but we also need one another. We make a difference in each others lives. My happiness is impossible without you to nourish and my sadness is unbearable without you to share it. LOVE is the key to being interconnected and interdependent. Feeling a bond or connection with something or somebody is a relieving guarantee what we share with each other. LOVE is one of the most effective elements of a bond. Different people strengthen their bonds by many ways. A couple may exchange promise rings. Some people may renew their vows to inculcate their bond. Likewise we are capable of keeping our universal bond of LOVE at a firm state to enhance the spirit of fellowship with each other. As Ayn Rand tells, To say I love you one must know first how to say the I. If we are with the capability of understanding with what we are feeling, experiencing and living, LOVE can gradually grow in ourselves. Then this true nature opens us to our authentic self. How do you act upon resentment, indignation or anger as a result of a perceived offence, disagreement, or mistake or ceasing to demand punishment or restitution? The Parable of the Prodigal Son is perhaps the best known instance of an answer to the above question. Forgiveness given and received, can lay lasting foundations for Universal LOVE. There are many people whom I esteem but for whom I feel neither affection nor sympathy. If I respect ones choice, we are not confident it wasnt the best choice. If I respect someones horn playing we cannot indicate a sheer improvement. And also I notice my own sympathy by asking ourselves if I am approved by the happiness and saddened by the sorrow of another, free of approximation of their passion. It is easy to assume that compassion presupposed LOVE since we appear to be willing to sacrifice for those we feel compassionate toward in return for the happiness we gain by assisting them. Respect and compassion are encircled around diversity. The LOVE I consider here is understanding each other and moving beyond simple clemency to embracing well-off dimensions of diversity contained within each individual. What makes us human is our capacity to LOVE. THE ART AND SCIENCE OF RFP WRITING - The Writers For Hire

THE ART AND SCIENCE OF RFP WRITING We’ve written quite a few blogs about how to craft a thoughtful, well-organized response to a request for proposal (RFP). If you’ve ever been tasked with responding to an RFP, you know that proposal writing takes a staggering amount of work, and just the right balance of art (writing and communication are definitely arts) and science (developing best practices, adhering to all rules and guidelines, etc.) We’ve also been on the other side of the process – and we’ve learned that writing the actual RFP can require just as much work – and the same balance of creativity and attention to detail. And we’ve identified some common sets of best practices that will help guide you through the process, whether you’re writing an RFP for a government organization, a private company, or a non-profit organization. Prep work and writing Grab your color palette and your microscope: Prior to putting the RFP â€Å"out on the street† you’ll need to use art and science to define the deliverables; develop a budget; and create project-specific evaluation criteria that will determine award of contract. Task: Scope of work Art- Communication is an art – and as project manager/lead writer, you’ll need to communicate and coordinate with all stakeholders on your team to figure out exactly what services and/or products you’re looking for and how long you’ll need them. Science- You’ll need to create a detailed Scope of Work (SOW) that details of the products, services, and deliverables you expect from a potential vendor. This is the time to think (and write) like a scientist – stick to facts and be as specific as possible about what you need. Task: Budget Art- You’ve no doubt heard of the art of negotiation – but budgeting is an art, too. To avoid setting your budget too high or too low you’ll need to come up with numbers that strike just the right balance. Science- Good, old-fashioned scientific inquiry is key to this step. Some key questions you’ll need to answer include: How much can your organization afford? How much do you actually want to spend? How much do the services and/or products outlined in your SOW typically cost? Task: Timeline Art- Can planning be an art? Absolutely – especially when you’re dealing with a complex project with lots of moving parts. Ideally, you should to give vendors enough time to review your RFP, submit questions, and craft a well-thought-out proposal; you’ll also want to give yourself and your team enough time to review each proposal and select a winner. Science- Create a detailed calendar that outlines each milestone for the RFP process, including: The date your organization plans to release the RFP The deadline for vendor questions The dates and times of any interviews, meetings or QA sessions related to your RFP The date finalists will be notified The date you’ll announce the winning bid Task: Evaluation Criteria Art- It’s brainstorming time. Get your team together, get creative, and make a list of your â€Å"ideal† candidate. What would make a vendor stand out from the crowd? What are your â€Å"must-haves† and what are your â€Å"nice-to-haves†? Are there any deal-breakers? Science- Now that you know what you want, you’ll need to find a way to make your criteria measurable. You could do this by developing a points system or a rating scale. The goal should be to create a system that will allow you to do an apples-to-apples comparison of all proposals. Task: Writing, Editing, and Proofreading Art- At this point, you should have everything you need to write a draft of your RFP. Writing is truly an art, and a well-written RFP should communicate your needs clearly and succinctly. The more specific you can be with your instructions and expectations, the better your chances of receiving useful and thorough proposals. Science Break out the microscope, because you’ll want to review your RFP draft very carefully: Check your facts, re-read your instructions and look for inconsistencies; review facts, dates, and contact information. And don’t forget to do a thorough proofreading to ensure that your final draft doesn’t contain any spelling and grammar errors. Congratulations! If you’ve reached this point, you’ve successfully navigated the art and science of crafting an RFP, and you’re ready to send the draft out into the world. But don’t hang up your easel and microscope just yet – you’ll need them. Responses, revisions, and compliance Now that the RFP has been published you can just sit back and wait for proposals to start rolling in, right? Well, not quite. This phase of the process requires you to actively track responses, answer questions, amend or revise the RFP as needed. Task: Tracking Inquiries Art- You’ll need to know who submitted proposals and when. The â€Å"art† part of this task is coming up with a simple, easy-to-update system for tracking responses. This could be anything from a spreadsheet to a living list housed on Google docs to a hand-written note. Science- Whether you’re new to the RFP process or you’re simply trying to find a better way to keep track of proposals, treat this part of the process like a science experiment: Take notes on what works (and what doesn’t), and adjust, adjust, adjust until you’ve got a system that works for you. Task: Answering Questions and Amending RFPs Art- As we mentioned in the â€Å"Prep work† section, writing is an art – and you’ll need to bust out your best editorial skills as you review vendor questions and update, revise, or amend your RFP in response. Science- Amending an RFP is a highly-structured process. As you amend your RFP, you’ll need to follow the rules and regulations to the letter, with a laser-like focus and a microscope’s-eye-view of every last requirement. Task: Determining Compliance Art- Your first step toward choosing a winner is a review of all the proposals submitted. At this point, you should be thinking â€Å"big picture† you’ll have plenty of time to get into the weeds during the evaluation phase. Of course, Even with a government RFP, there’s a bit of art and balance involved in deciding whether a proposal is considered â€Å"compliant.† For example, if a proposal follows the important rules regarding content, you and your team may decide to overlook the occasional typo or funky formatting error (after all, everyone makes mistakes). Science- Human error and typos are one thing – but rules are rules. While your inner creative may be willing to forgive the occasional misplaced comma, the logical, left-brain part of you should be on high alert for deal-breakers, such as: Proposals turned in late Proposals that are missing required/requested information Proposals that don’t follow your requested structure or formatting Proposals that do not include required documentation, such as information about insurance, finances, and processes. Evaluation and choosing a winner As the old saying goes, â€Å"All that glitters ain’t gold, and all that’s gold don’t glitter.† And, in the world of government RFPs, you’ll need to separate the gold from the glitter to choose finalists or a winning vendor. Simple compliance isn’t quite enough, and attractive design can only go so far (we’ve seen our share of â€Å"pretty† proposals with surprisingly little substance). Your team will have to use a combination of creativity, communication, and objective â€Å"just-the-facts† judgment to evaluate each proposal that makes it past the initial â€Å"compliant or not† screening. Task: Evaluating Proposals Art- You’ll need to artfully manage and facilitate team communications to ensure every member of the evaluation team is given equal consideration. Science- You’ll also need to make sure that the team sticks to your agreed-upon scoring system as they evaluate each proposal. This isn’t a situation where gut feelings should take over. Task: Negotiations and Award Art- You’ve selected a winner – and now it’s time to talk terms. At this point in the process, everything is on the table. This is the â€Å"emotional† side of the process: Your artful communication skills will help you work with your team to determine deal-breakers and non-negotiables – and help you work with your selected vendor to come to an agreement that makes everyone happy. Science- There’s more to negotiation than making sure everyone gets what they want (or that they’re at least satisfied with the compromise). As you negotiate, you’ll need to get everything in writing and take detailed notes that you can use when you move on to the drafting phase: Purchase orders must be generated and approved per generally accepted accounting principles; and you’ll need to keep an eye out for any scope changes. Task: Contract Writing Art- After the negotiations, it’s time to write up the official contract. Put on your writer/editor hat, and remember to seek feedback from your team members as you write a draft. Science- Documentation of the offer, acceptance, and consideration must be enforceable – and you’ll need to make sure that the contract adheres to any regulations or requirements. Lessons learned The great thing about writing RFPs is that each one is an opportunity to improve, streamline, and develop a set of creative and scientific best practices that will make things go more smoothly next time around.
